      • Hari Bansha Acharya

      • Born: 13th November, 1957 in Gairidhara, Kathmandu

      • Popular as: Hari bahadur

Hari Bansha Acharya came from a conservative family where his parents wanted him to study Sanskrit and Rudri. They wanted him to become a big Pandit in the future. So, he was not allowed to study at schools like other normal kids.

Acharya was a mischievous kid and was not at all an obedient one. He had a naturally comedic personality and used to entertain his friends by doing funny mimicry of their teachers. The friends used to say that it would be lonely without Acharya.

He hated studying Sanskrit so much that he bunked classes. Once he got caught by his mother and found out he had been missing classes for 10-15 days. Although he got punished, he bunked school again.

Acharya and his mischievous demeanor also once led him to cheat a little money from former Prime Minister Kritinidhi Bista. After winning a game of cards in Tihar, Bista gave Acharya 300 rupees and asked to buy him a pack of cigarettes. Acharya went to buy the cigarettes and never came back with the money. It was after 15 or 16 years that he revealed the wrongdoing to him and Bista burst out in laughter.

Despite his fun-filled childhood, Acharya had a life full of struggles. Due to poor economic status, he had to start working from a really young age. After the saddening demise of his mother, he got an opportunity to go to normal school. Because he was not privileged to go to school earlier, he was pretty poor at school. He could not do good in his grades and failed SLC twice. He passed at his second attempt when he had already started earning.

Career

Early Career

Hari Bansa Acharya’s first job was as an accountant in Ratna Rajya School. He was only 17 then. He gave SLC in 2032 in the same school but failed. Laxmi Prasad Adhikari, the headteacher of the school knew about Acharya’s economic condition and offered him a job there. Acharya earned 135 rupees monthly.

While working in the school, he joined Radio Nepal where he did radio drama every Saturday directed by Hari Prasad Rimal. He earned NRs. 30 in a day for performing the radio drama. Then, he joined Bhairav Nrityata and got an opportunity to travel to different places of Nepal with Bhairav Bahadur Thapa.

One of the shows by Bahirav Nrityata was at Pokhara where the guests were Gopal Ninjan, Aruna Lama, and Kumar Basnet. It was the same day when his SLC results were published. It was the second time he appeared in SLC and fortunately, he passed this time. Aruna Lama was one of the people to congratulate him.

Hari Prasad Rimal from Radio Nepal was the one to offer Acharya with an opportunity to perform at Rastriya Naahghar. He got an opportunity to perform in front of some of the “क” grade artists of that era like Narayan Gopal, Kamala Shrestha, and Ganesh Rashik. The earning of NRs. 175 and Acharya agreed to join. There he got to perform in an act called “Amar Singh”. People loved his act and even the King’s secretary praised him with the GM, Indra Prasad Kafle. Hence, he got a pay raise to NRs. 275.

Whenever there were good shows, the royal family used to attend too. In one of the acts, Acharya managed to entertain the queen so much that the GM decided to raise his salary with NRs. 100. His articles were published in the newspaper too.

Later in the year 2037 B.S., he joined Nepal Rastriya Bank because he wanted to build a house in Kathmandu, and working in the government sector would help.

In the silver jubilee of Nepal Rastriya Bank, Hari Bansha had to perform a show in a very short period of time because the royal family was the chief guest and they had to leave early. That was where he met Madan Krishna Shrestha and did a show together called “Bankeshwor”. After the entertainment they had presented, the duo decided to perform together again.

The breakthrough - Beginning of MaHa Jodi

With Madan Krishna Shrestha, Acharya performed at “Gaijatra Mahotsav”. The drama they presented was “Yamalok”. The drama was full of satirical humor and people loved it. Acharya says if the show was not successful, the MaHa Jodi would not have existed.

Due to the hit show, Acharya’s Madan dai said he wanted to release a cassette of the drama. “Yamalok” was only 30 minutes and the cassette needed 2 sides of 30 minutes drama. So, they decided to create other drama as well. The drama was called “Paralysis”. The cassette and earning became very decent after that. MaHa Jodi shows were a super hit and the fame began.

Once, he did a show called “Hoste Hainse” and it was somehow satirical to the government and thus, got terminated for the job at NRB. That was how MaHa Jodi’s journey smoothly moved forward.

With popularity he gained as a member of MaHa Jodi, he got plenty of opportunities to act in Nepali films and TV series. They decided to create a TV series called “50-50”. Slowly they started focusing on characters along with scripts. Together, they decided to work together on creating certain characters for certain plots. The style, the observations, and a lot of practice made them better and created a lot of characters. With no specialists and low budget, the Jodi had to work on multiple aspects as artists and learned practically rather than learning from classes.

MaHa Jodi has also performed in the US.

Other works

Besides acting, Acharya also loves to sing. He has given his voice to a lot of lok sangeet with his childhood friends but has no records of it. Acharya’s Madan dai did singing too, and so he asked Acharya if he wanted to invest a little on a recording studio named Symphonic.

Through that recording studio, he got to meet so many people and wanted to sing a song as well. He wasn’t confident as he did not have any professional lessons. But he tried and wrote the song “Sajha Bus”. He also wrote the song “Hamri Aama sarai bathi chan”, “Chanchale chanchale” and more with his voice. He also released an album named “Shaukh” in 2053 B.S.

Moreover, he also learned to compose music through harmonium.

Acharya is an author as well. He has written “Mahasan”, “Hari Bahadur”, and “China Harayeko Manche”.

Personal Life

Hari Bansha Acharya is the son of Homanjaya Acharya and Ganesh Kumari Acharya. He has five elder sisters. He was married to Meera Acharya in the year 1983. They have two children, Mohit Acharya and Trilok Acharya. In the year 2011, Meera lost her life to a medical mishap. Hari Bansha Acharya then remarried to Ramila Pathak.

He lost his parents at a very young age that forced him to get a job for a living. Later on, destiny took him to the place where he deserved all the recognition.

He met Madan Krishna Shrestha at a drama for Nepal Ratriya Bank’ silver jubilee and have been working together since then.
