Bhusan Dahal

Known for: Occupation as media person, TV anchor, Director, Producer

Tara Bhusan Dahal, a prominent face of Nepali media was born on the 18th of May, 1966. The only son to his parents is still considered an icon when it comes to TV and media after spending about three decades in the industry. He is widely known for his unique presentation on the show Sunday Pop. Besides gifting the audiences with powerful interviews, Dahal was also the one to bring a new turn in Nepali music videos and movies.

Dahal started his journey in the media through NTV as a producer – but had to manage the wires. He then slowly climbed the ladder through his first show “Chiya Charcha”. Besides these, he has also made his name stronger through his skills on “Kagbeni” and other videos.

      • Born: May 18, 1966
      • Widely known as: Bhusan Dahal

Tara Bhusan Dahal did his kindergarten at Kanti Ishwori School and then continued his schooling in St. Xaviers School, Jawalakhel. After the third standard, he was admitted to Budhanilkantha School as a hostel student. As a resident of Kupondol, Dahal found the location like a new world as soon as he crossed Narayan Gopal Chowk.

There at Budhanilkantha, he got to learn a strong bond of brotherhood that he still reminisces. About 5 batch junior to him was the late crown prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah. Dahal, during his school days, describes himself as an intelligent boy but not academically. He disliked maths but was good at the subjects he loved.

Other than that, he was also good at acting and got to play as a lead role in a school drama of ‘Mighty Mandarin’. Funny story, the lead role was of a girl. The character was Ming Ling, the daughter of King Fu.

After schooling, he joined ASCOL (Amrit Science College). Dahal was pushed into taking Biology, which he did not like that much. The transition from a private school to a government college was pretty drastic for Dahal which turned him into a free and fun-loving youngster. One of his mischievous acts also included filling one of his teacher’s motorcycle tank with sugar cubes.

At that age, Dahal’s father got him a guitar as a gift one day and then started his interest in music. He used to play it on rooftops and sing his heart out. He also performed “Country Roads” at Academy Hall, Kamaladi.

Those days, Television sets and decks were uncommon and only a few people had it. Dahal happened to be the lucky kid with a TV and a deck in his house. But, every time he came back home from college, his house was filled with neighbors who came over to watch TV. It got so frustrating to the point where he decided to sell the Hitachi TV and Aakai deck to one of his friends from Bouddha.

It was one and half years later that he realized he was not made for biology or science. With lots of courage, he told his father and then decided to join Patan Campus as an Arts student. After one year, he pursued further studies.

Career

Early Career

Tara Bhusal Dahal did not start big. He joined the TV industry in 1988 after college as a daily wage intern who earned NRs. 20 per day. Of course, Dahal’s father was not happy as he already knew what life was actually like behind all the glamour. There at NTV, he was competitive and a tough critic.

Only at the age of 20 or 21, he got an opportunity to present his first show, “Chiya Charcha”. The first interview in his career was a comparison interview between Gopal Chitrakar, a professional photographer, and Madam Mishra who was an amateur wildlife photographer. Without many references back in the days, Dahal somehow did a brilliant job.

He took the first interview of Nhyoo Bajracharya, one of the best music composers of Nepal. He also took the first interview of Manisha Koirala after she debuted in “Pheri Bhetaula”. Likewise, he has interviewed Arun Chaudhary and Prasiddha Bahadur Pandey.

Breakthrough opportunity

Bhusan Dahal had his growth through a show on NTV named “Sunday Pop” which started in 1988.

Before the show started, NTV used to get free tapes from a company called German Translate. The NTV team had also received a few tapes that had top songs of western music in the pop genre. After a few weeks, they had few tapes with 1 or 2 hours of music duration.

Dahal was the one to approach his seniors to make a program for these kinds of music – considering the fact that some people may actually like them. Dahal’s idea received approval, his seniors told him to give it a shot, and that was how Sunday Pop began.

The show immediately got attention and created a buzz regarding the language choice. According to the audiences, the show contains English songs so the show should be presented in English language. Upon further discussions and understanding, it was decided that the show will be presented in a bilingual manner. But due to the contents of the program, the show was presented in English language later.

Other works

After 1990, he started a show called “Pratibimba”. Through this show, he wanted to connect with people from his generation. There he presented contents in the form of a documentary that included culture, heritage, success stories, and more. Then he became keen to know more about the larger programs of the TV industry.

Before 1995, he got a brief but a huge opportunity of working as a head Executive Producer of Young Asia Television in Sri Lanka. It was a leadership role as a young man in a multinational team. It gave him huge experience but not enough recognition according to him.

After coming back to Nepal in 1995, Dahal became the first Executive Producer of Image Channel. During his days in Image Channel, he directed a lot of music videos. One of the most popular was “Miss catwalk”. He also directed music videos for Nima Rumba, Ram Krishna Dhakal, 1974 AD, Nhyoo Bajracharya, Karna Das and also Nepathya.

Then in 2003, he started the show “Fireside” on Kantipur Television. The show was a big hit in the channel and was one of the favorites among the audience. In the early 2000s, he had another show on the same channel called “Ghumgham”. He also initiated “Disha Nirdesh”.

Besides presenting shows on TV, he has also directed films and music videos. He made his debut as a film director in “Kagbeni” in the year 2008. He has also made a contribution on a Nepali TV series named “हाम्रो Team” in 2011.

He was also the director of “Divya Drishti”, a production house. Apart from these, he has also given guest lectures in different colleges and universities.

Right now, he is the Chief Executive AGM of Kantipur Television Network.

Personal Life

After finishing SLC, he was a bit misguided and became an art student. He joined TC for bachelors and after almost a 4 years gap he graduated with a master’s degree in Sociology. He completed his masters after 11 years of finishing SLC.

He is married to Kohinoor and they have two kids.

Before he got his fame from Sunday Pop, he got an opportunity to interview some rising celebrities of that era like Manisha Koirala and Nhyoo Bajracharya. Although the show wasn’t a big hit, he called them some of the most cherishable moments of his career.
