A multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, performer and a scholar of ethnomusicology, whose songs make for a cerebral experience. That’s Lochan Rijal.His unconventional approach to music includes exploration of Nepali music and experimentation with new sounds to bring about an innovative approach to sound production that fuses different musical styles. Known for his reverence for Nepali local music, Rijal is the first Nepali to complete a PhD programme in Ethnomusicology from the Department of Music, Kathmandu University and the University of Massachusetts.Currently working as the Associate Professor and Head of Kathmandu University Department of Music, Lochan Rijal spent years travelling across Nepal studying diverse local musical traditions and instrument-making techniques.
