Bhuwan Thapa Chand

Bhuwan Thapa Chand was born on July 14, 1950. She is known for being the first female actor in Nepali feature films. She made her debut with the film ‘Aama’. Chand is better known as the first Nepali Heroine. Besides ‘Aama’, she has made an appearance in other popular movies such as ‘Maha Maya’, ‘Jiwan Rekha’, and more. Her roles are also in television series, one of which is ‘Hijo Aaja ko Kura’.

Chand is also a Kathak dance student and is a gem in Naachghar. She is one of the most popular dancers there and has won several prizes with her dance as well. Thapa began enhancing her skills at a really young age and got quite the fame because of her skills.

        • Born: July 14, 1950

        • Known as: First Nepali Actress

        • Known for: acting, dancing, drama

Bhuwan Thapa Chand, unlike any other girls, started acting at the age of 4. She was a bright student who was focused on her studies more than she was in theatres and arts. She studied at  Demonstration School, which is now named Laboratory School. Her father, Bhairab Bahadur Thapa was a very friendly, social, and kind man who did not stop his daughter from going into arts like the ordinary fathers in that generation would.

Thapa, however, was not into theatres, dramas, and arts as much as she was into her studies. She was pushed into drama by her father. Because she got support from her father, it was easier for her to get a platform. She started acting and dancing as well. People enjoyed her performance and Thapa remembers her childhood days wearing a frock and dancing in front of her friends.

Those days did not have more preference for girls to acquire education, but Thapa’s father wanted his daughter to have a proper education. Bhairab Bahadur Thapa already knew a lot of people because of his profession as a dance king. So, Bhuwan also got to see a lot of famous people when she was little. She used to go to the performance halls, see different acts and also have Jerry that was there to serve people.

Career

Early Career

Thapa started her journey by performing in dramas. She began her drama journey in 2010 B.S. It was a long time ago before she did her first film – 11 years before to be exact. She had also recorded a lot of songs on Radio Nepal before her filming journey.

Thapa used to go to Radio Nepal as a child with her father on a bicycle. There in Radio Nepal, she used to meet a lot of her father’s friends who were also popular back then in their field. They treated Thapa as if she were their daughter and everybody knew that she was Bhairab Bahadur Thapa’s daughter. She went to Radio Nepal frequently which made her feel like it was her second home.

There were also a few kids programs back in the days where Bhuwan used to work. Likewise, she also used to sing the chorus for a few songs. It was once or twice that she used to work there for shows and sang the chorus. Thapa has sung a number of national songs and folk songs on Radio Nepal. She could learn so much about performance there. Sometimes her father would teach her and sometimes her father’s friends would.

Thapa grew up learning about performances. As she was growing up, the entertainment sector slowly started getting more attention. The government decided to contribute a sum of money to the entertainment sector. They also requested people from abroad to start a few academies/organizations for the entertainment sector with that money. Nepal then had three of these academies Jananati Parishad, Naasha: Khala:, and Nepal Kala Kendra. Then, slowly the rise of actors and performing arts students started growing.

Thapa was also studying and was still young. When she reached the age of 18, then her talents became her profession. She used to do drama outside the Nepal Kala Kendra before starting her profession.

Thapa once got an offer of a musical act because there were no female actors. It was for the occasion of Ratna Rajya Laxmi’s birthday. Shyamdas Baishyap wrote an act that required a young woman for a role and asked Bhuwan to do the role. The act was titled ‘Prakriti ko Prerana’ in Rastriya Naachghar. After that act, the director asked if she wanted a job there and she got the job.

Breakthrough Role in Aama

Thapa already had a job when she had to go for an audition for a film. She also had other friends that went to audition with her. They all auditioned but Bhuwan Thapa got the role. It was quite an unusual experience for her in the audition because people from that generation did not have an idea about lights, camera, and edits. And since Thapa was a part of the drama, it was quite unusual for her.

While Thapa watched many films, she always used to get fascinated with the heroines. The pretty look, dress, and charm that heroines had always fascinated Thapa. She did not know that she got the lead role in the beginning, but when she did, it was an amazing moment. The acting was not difficult for her but being a heroine was special for her. Her first shoot was for a song and she finished the act in the first take. Because of this, she also got a lot of praises from the crew members, one of them being the cameraman. The entire shooting lasted about 4 months.

‘Aama’ was the first feature film of Nepal and Bhuwan Thapa was the first female actor of Nepal. It was released in 2021 B.S. But at that time, Thapa did not feel big. The buzz of the film was quite big in Nepal and was first shown in Army headquarters where there was the presence of late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah. There were a lot of actors present there during the premier. The king enjoyed the film as well and congratulated the cast and crew of the film. Thapa was amazed when his majesty the king himself announced her name and also contributed prizes for the members. She was also a favorite of King Mahendra when it came to dramas.

After ‘Aama’ she started getting offers for other films. After marriage, she went to Baitadi and Europe. After coming back to Nepal for Europe, she also started doing character roles.

Personal life

Bhuwan Thapa Chand was born and raised in Thamel, Kathmandu. She did her schooling in Demonstration School (Now: Laboratory School) in Balkhu. Her father was the king of dance, Bhairab Bahadur Thapa, and her mother was Gujeshwari Thapa. After school, she joined Ratna Rajya Campus (RR Campus)

Thapa started performing arts at a really young age and got to learn a lot about it from her father and her father’s friends. With a lot of support from her father, she got to perform on platforms such as Radio Nepal. She started working as a performing artist at the age of 18 and made her debut from ‘Aama’, the first feature film of the Nepali film industry.

After ‘Aama’, she got an offer for ‘Hijo Aaja Bholi’ and her acting career in the film industry did not stop. Thapa was more dedicated to her work rather than being dedicated to earning from her work. It was also one of her weaknesses and she could not deny working with people despite how much they offered.

Bhuwan married Michael Chand in 1976 A.D. who was head over heels for her. They have three daughters together.
