Along with her journey as a model and TV personality, Subba is also active in many social campaigns. She has her own business of clothing store and the store has it’s own designers.

        • Born: July 19, 1981

        • Known as: Malvika Subba

        • Known for: TV host, media personality, professional Emcee, trainer of personality development and public speaking, entrepreneur, Miss Nepal winner 2002, social activist, actress

Malvika Subba grew up in a family where education was the main priority for children. With that, Subba was a bright student and was pretty good at sports and extracurricular activities as well. Her parents had a habit of reading and were really health conscious. So, the habit of the family was to do their part of the household chores and were quite disciplined. Even though she was quite disciplined and had a strict family, she was also pampered by her father because she was the only daughter.

Her siblings had just finished SLC when Subba was born and went to India for studies. By the time Subba reached the third standard, her mother went to Chandigarh, India to study bachelors along with her brothers. She lived with her father in Kathmandu and this is why she was very close to her father.

She lost her father when she was in the fifth grade and affected her deeply. She had to become independent and learned all the responsibility along with being a good student. Her mother has played the role of both mother and father and taught her children to be self-reliable.

Career

The first step to fame - Miss Nepal 2002

Subba wanted to become a Miss Nepal and wanted to become one. She saw Ruby Rana become the first Miss Nepal in 1994. She really wanted to become one too and her teachers and friends were quite supportive in her decision. But her mother was not happy. It took a few years to finally convince her mother.

Subba knew she wanted to finish her bachelor’s before joining so she completed it first. She got in as a participant and learned everything she could from her training with Rachana Gurung Sharma. She did get a bit intimidated but believed in herself as well.

Subba used public transportation prior to the Miss Nepal journey, but after she won, she hesitated to use them. She knew she had to get her own scooter then. There were not many activities that the winner had to involve in after the beauty pageant ended. So, Subba was quite free and her next priority was to get a job.

There was an announcement for a job on Kantipur Television. Subba applied, gave an audition, and got selected. After getting the job, she bought her own scooter.

Breakthrough - The world of TV

Subba also worked on Divyaa Drishti before joining Miss Nepal but because of studies, she had to quit. But she learned a lot and got quite a bit of experience from there.

But after joining Kantipur Television, there was much more to learn than what she had done. Everything was new and the Television channel was really popular. The creative era of the Nepali TV had taken a rise and there were exciting techniques used in their works.

The first year in a career at Kantipur Television has been the best learning experience so far in her life. She got to work with a bunch of talented media personalities there such as Bhsuan Dahal, Suraj Singh Thakuri, Alok Nepal, Deepanjali, Pooja Gurung, and more.

There she got to present shows where one of the most popular was Call Kantipur. She then quit Kantipur Television because she had already joined masters in mass communication. But her experiences got her a lot of attention and she was already really good at that field.

At the end of 2007, she decided to quit television and went to India to take a break. There she learned about audition happening for a show called Voice of India. There she got the job and worked there for a year. While working for Voice of India in Delhi, she got an offer of MTV EXIT from Mumbai. She also worked on MTV EXIT and in 2009, she also worked as the brand ambassador for human trafficking.

Other works

After coming  to Nepal and deciding she will keep a distance from media, she decided to work as a marketing manager in Shangrila housing. While working there, she got an offer of an indo-nepali film. In 2010, she did the movie God lives in The Himalayas.

Then, she was on again – off again with her appearance in media because she wasn’t comfortable with it. It was the same time where she got an offer for Goodbye Kathmandu from Nabin Subba as well. She already got so many offers but really loved the script of Goodbye Kathmandu and she agreed. But later she decided she was not into acting.

Later, she directed and produced How Funny with Nilu Doma Sherpa. Nilu was also a roommate of Subba in India and she studied filmmaking. Although the movie was not successful amid the audience, it did not make so much loss.

In 2011, she became the chief editor of Navyata magazine. While working there, she also started her own business. She started House of Alternative Apparel which is a retail clothing line. She has also worked as an editor in WAVE magazine. And in 2015, she became a judge of Mega Model. She is also a co-founder and board member of Himalayan Climate Initiative (HCI).

Subba has been a part of many social campaigns as well. She has been associated with Action Aid’s Hunger-Free Campaign as Youth SpokesPerson. Also, she has worked with UNICEF as HIV/AIDS Youth Leader.

Personal life

Malvika Subba was born and raised in Kathmandu and her parents were from Dharan. Her father was a DSP Officer and her mother was from the nursing sector. She has two elder brothers and is the youngest child of the family. She is married to Riyaj Shrestha in 2012 and they have a son together, Zayir Rio Subba Shrestha.

Subba did her schooling in Galaxy Public School and plus 2 in Kantipur City College. She studied BBA in Ace College on Management and for masters, she studied mass communication at Tribhuwan University.
