Live Interview with Mira Rai
Mira Rai is a Nepalese trail runner and sky runner. She has participated in many international competitions and has won numerous awards. She was the winner of 2017 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Born into poverty in the remote Himalayan foothills of Bhojpar in Nepal, Mira had an unusual start to life for a now internationally recognised ultrarunner. With her family struggling financially due to the Nepalese Civil War, at the age of 15, Mira decided to join the Communist Party insurgents as a child soldier, in order to support her family, and escape traditionalist barriers surrounding the role of women in Nepali society.
It was during her time training as a child soldier that she found her passion for running – a passion that saw her go on to not only become one of the world’s best female ultrarunners, but become a symbol of hope for Nepal.
