Tara Bhusan Dahal did his kindergarten at Kanti Ishwori School and then continued his schooling in St. Xaviers School, Jawalakhel. After the third standard, he was admitted to Budhanilkantha School as a hostel student. As a resident of Kupondol, Dahal found the location like a new world as soon as he crossed Narayan Gopal Chowk.
There at Budhanilkantha, he got to learn a strong bond of brotherhood that he still reminisces. About 5 batch junior to him was the late crown prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah. Dahal, during his school days, describes himself as an intelligent boy but not academically. He disliked maths but was good at the subjects he loved.
Other than that, he was also good at acting and got to play as a lead role in a school drama of ‘Mighty Mandarin’. Funny story, the lead role was of a girl. The character was Ming Ling, the daughter of King Fu.
After schooling, he joined ASCOL (Amrit Science College). Dahal was pushed into taking Biology, which he did not like that much. The transition from a private school to a government college was pretty drastic for Dahal which turned him into a free and fun-loving youngster. One of his mischievous acts also included filling one of his teacher’s motorcycle tank with sugar cubes.
At that age, Dahal’s father got him a guitar as a gift one day and then started his interest in music. He used to play it on rooftops and sing his heart out. He also performed “Country Roads” at Academy Hall, Kamaladi.
Those days, Television sets and decks were uncommon and only a few people had it. Dahal happened to be the lucky kid with a TV and a deck in his house. But, every time he came back home from college, his house was filled with neighbors who came over to watch TV. It got so frustrating to the point where he decided to sell the Hitachi TV and Aakai deck to one of his friends from Bouddha.
It was one and half years later that he realized he was not made for biology or science. With lots of courage, he told his father and then decided to join Patan Campus as an Arts student. After one year, he pursued further studies.
